Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Chandidas Ganguly (born 8 July 1972) is the former captain of the India cricket team. He is one of India's most successful captains. Born in an elite family of Bengal, Sourav Ganguly was brought to the world of cricket by his brother Snehashish Ganguly. He started his career playing in the school and state level team. He is currently ranked 5th among the highest run-scorers in ODIs and the second player to make 10,000 and the second Indian after Sachin Tendulkar. According to Cricket Magazine Wisden, he is at 6th place among the best one-day batsmen of all time.

After performing well in several regional tournaments (such as Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy etc.), Ganguly got the opportunity to play against England in the national team. He made 131 in the first Test and made his place in the team. After consistently performing well against Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Australia and winning many Man of the Match titles, their place in the team was confirmed. In the 1999 Cricket World Cup, he shared 318 runs with Rahul Dravid, which is still the highest in World Cup history.

In 2000, due to the match-fixing scandal of the other members of the team, the poor health supremo, Sachin Tendulkar, gave up captaincy, which led to Ganguly being named a captain. Soon Ganguly faced criticism in the media due to poor performance from county cricket and shirt in NatWest Final in 2002. Sourav represented India in the 2003 World Cup and India beat Australia in the World Cup final. Later that year Saurav Ganguly was dropped from the team due to poor performance. In 2004, he was awarded the Padma Shri, which is one of India's best awards. Saurav Ganguly's return to the national team in 2006 and he did the best. At the same time, he came into controversy with coach Greg Chappell of India. Ganguly was reinstated from the team but was selected to play in the 2007 Cricket World Cup.

In 2008, the team of Sourav Indian Premier League was made the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders. After a home series against Australia this year, Ganguly announced his retirement from cricket. After this, Ganguly was playing with the Bengal team and was made the chairman of Cricket Development Committee of the Bengal Cricket Association. Left-handed batsman Sourav Ganguly is known as a successful one-day player, who scored more than 11000 runs in one-day matches. He is one of India's most successful Test captains, who saw success in 21 matches out of 49 in the team. Ganguly, famous as a fierce captain, provided many new players an opportunity to play during his captaincy.

Bengal Cricket Association appointed Sourav Ganguly as the game administrator in July 2014.

Sourav Ganguly was born on July 8, 1972, in Calcutta. Chandidas and Nirupa are younger sons of Ganguly.
