Mohammad Hamid Ansari (born 1 April 1934) is the current Vice-President of India. He is also the former Chairman of the Indian Minorities Commission. He is an educationist, and a major politician, and has also been Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University. He was elected the 13th Vice President of India on August 10, 2007.
Early life and career:
Mr. Ansari was born on April 1, 1937 in West Bengal's capital city of Kolkata. His education began in St. Edwards High School, Shimla, St. Xavier's College, Kolkata and Aligarh Muslim University.
Mr. Ansari started his career as a bureaucrat of the Indian Foreign Service in 1961 when he was appointed a permanent representative of India in the United Nations. He is also the High Commissioner of India in Australia. He later also worked as Afghanistan's ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, and Iran. He was also honored with the Padma Shri in 1984. He was also Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University from May 2000 to March 2004. They are also appreciated for compensation to the victims of Sun Pass Riot and their role for goodwill.
