Kalyan Singh

Kalyan Singh (born 1932) is an Indian politician. He is currently the Governor of Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh. Prior to that, he has also been the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He has been Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh twice and he was appointed Governor of Rajasthan on August 26, 2014. He is known as a fundamentalist Hindutva plaintiff and his work in the Babri Masjid demolition is controversial.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister for the first time
He became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in June 1991. After the demolition of Babri Masjid, he resigned from the Chief Minister on December 6, 1992 after taking his moral responsibility.

He was elected MLA from Atruli and Kasganj in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election in 1993. The BJP emerged as the largest party in the elections but under the leadership of Mulayam Singh Yadav, the Samajwadi-Bahujan Samaj Party formed coalition government. Kalyan Singh became the leader of the opposition in the Legislative Assembly.

He again became Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh from September 1997 to November 1999.

On October 21, 1997, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) withdrew support from the Kalyan Singh government. Kalyan Singh was already in contact with Congress MLA Naresh Agarwal and immediately instantly formed the new party Democratic Congress and supported 21 MLAs. For this, he handed over the charge of the energy department to Naresh Agarwal.

Kalyan Singh left the party in December 1999 and again joined the BJP in January 2004. In the general elections of 2004, he contested Lok Sabha elections from Bulandshahr as a BJP candidate. In 2009, he resigned from the BJP and was elected an Independent MP from the Eta Lok Sabha constituency.

Governor:
Singh took oath as the Governor of Rajasthan on September 4, 2014. He was given additional charge of the Governor of Himachal Pradesh in January 2015.
