Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed (3 May 1905 - 11 February 1977) was the fifth President of India. He was president from August 24, 1974, until 11 February 1977.
Fakhruddin Ahmed's grandfather, Khaliluddin Ali Ahmed, was from Karmarkhat (near Golaghat) of Assam. Ahmad was born on May 13, 1905, in Delhi. His father was Colonel Zalanur Ali. His mother was the daughter of the Nawab of Lohari in Delhi.
Ahmed was educated at Government High School and Delhi Government High School of Gonda Jill. For higher education, he went to England in 1923, where he studied at St. Catherine's College, Cambridge. In 1928, he started legal practice in the Lahore High Court.
After joining Nehru in England in 1925, he joined the Indian National Congress. He actively participated in the freedom movement. In 1974, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi selected Ahmed for president and became the second Muslim president of India. On the say of Indira Gandhi, he used his constitutional right in 1975 and declared an internal emergency.
Ahmed died in office in 1977 after heart failure was stopped.
