Zakir Hussain:

Dr. Zakir Hussain (February 8, 1897 - May 3, 1969) was the third President of India, whose tenure was from 13 May 1967 to 3 May 1968. Dr. Zakir Hussain was born on February 8, 1897, in the Dhanadhya Pathan family of Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. After some time his father had come to live in Uttar Pradesh. At the age of 23, he became a member of the founding party of Jamia Millia Islamia University. Zakir Hussain was the third President and Chief Educationist of India. In 1962, he became Vice-President of India. He was awarded Bharat Ratna in the year 1963.

In 1969, due to an untimely death, he could not complete his presidential term. Dr. Zakir Hussain was one of the greatest supporters of modern education in India and he established Jamia Millia Islamia in his leadership as a Central University in New Delhi, from which thousands of students have been studying in many subjects each year. He continued to support himself continuously, thus giving his academic and managerial leadership to the organization for 21 years. As a teacher, Dr. Zakir Hussain publicized the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and Hakim Ajmal Khan. He served as an active member of the country's many academic reforms movement by the middle of the 1930s.

Dr. Zakir Hussain was elected Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (formerly known as Anglo-Mohammedan Oriental College) in independent India. During his tenure as Vice Chancellor, Dr. Zakir Hussain has been able to stop many teachers working in this institution from doing so in support of the demand to create a separate country in Pakistan. Dr. Zakir Hussain was awarded Padma Vibhushan in the year 1954. Dr. Zakir Hussain was nominated for the Rajya Sabha at the end of his tenure as Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University. In this way, he became a member of Indian Parliament in the year 1956. He made governor of Bihar for only one year, but later he remained in this post for five years (from 1957 to 1962).

Zakir Hussain was honored with Bharat Ratna Award in the year 1963, after seeing his work. Delhi, Kolkata, Aligarh, Allahabad and Cairo universities honored them with De-Litt (honorary) degree. With the end of his tenure as the governor, Dr. Zakir Hussain was elected the second Vice-President of the country for a period of five years. He assumed the presidency on May 13, 1967.
