Nityanand Swami

Nityanand Swami is the former Chief Minister of India's Uttarakhand state. Uttarakhand was named after Uttarakhand during his reign. He was the first Chief Minister of the state and his reign ran from November 9, 2000 to 29 October 2001. He was born on 27th December, 1927 in the state of Haryana, but spent most of his life in Dehradun where his father was working at the Indian Institute of Forestry. They are married to Chandrakanta Swami and they have four daughters. At an early age, he joined the Indian Independence Movement through the RSS and in Dehradun he participated in local protests.

He is an advocate from the profession and joining the Jana Sangh, he entered active politics. Professional lawyer, Swami entered active politics under Jana Sangh. Nitinand first went to the Indian National Congress and later reached the Bharatiya Janata Party. By climbing the steps of politics, he was elected to the legislative council from the largest (region-wise) graduate constituency of Garhwal and Kumaon. In 1991, he became the Deputy Chairman of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council and in 1991, he was elected unanimously. On becoming a separate state of Uttaranchal (now Uttarakhand) in 2000, the Bharatiya Janata Party asked him to take over as the Chief Minister of the new state. He took office from 9 November 2000 to 29 October 2001 and then asked the BJP On behalf of Bhagat Singh Kosariyari, voluntary abdication.

Since then, he has contested two elections for the state Assembly (2002 and 2007) from his native constituency Laxman Chowk (Dehradun Nagar), but both of them lost to Dinesh Aggarwal of the Indian National Congress. However, Swamy is an active politician and active member of his party.
